So comes snow after fire,
and even dragons have their endings.
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit
These are the unique species of the same dragons capable of spitting fire, and of the same family and genus, too. Although they just started to inhabit the waters for a few centuries ago where they learned to gradually evolve from the unfriendly habitat through natural selection, their characteristics and capabilities have changed quite significantly from their flying cousins.
In fact, these gradual changes that made significant alteration to the waterbred genus were actually effected by an unknown force (an impetus, as a word some would use), a very difficult process that have been done by nature to these class of dragons in such a brute manner, so much that most of the genetic manipulations that happened to their cellular composition have metaphysically altered their substance in a way that made them now unique and stronger.
For one, these dragons were very excellent swimmers, a skill that they have used in a variety of ways that their kind needed to do in order to continue to exist and avoid extinction, but most notable of all the significant changes is their ability to feed on invisible things. Because their fire breathing characteristics have been suppressed by their need to submerge themselves in water for survival, a unique ability has formed within them when their genetic composition ultimately adapted to the new environment that they were not endemic to inhabit.
And so nature gave birth to a new mythical creature, a dragon that is not typically accustomed to what dragons are supposed to be as substantiated by a fantasy writer's mind, a very curious occurence in its dimension that the genetic manipulation caused by the suppression of the breath of fire gave rise to a new and unique feeding ability that replaced their usual diet.
They all responded to the mysterious call of the Massachu, and this is how their new diet came to be. The light is a force; it is a weird and distinct impetus to have come.
(The Massachu is a very powerful ball of light that is revered and substantiated in other related stories.)
It may be too complicated to describe these natural changes in technical language on such a short notice, although most of the meanings that could be ascribed to the many aspects of imagination will involve a lot of alchemic equations that it might risk articulating some boring literature that may not be appreciated by the reluctant mind of a recreational reader.
Such will not be attempted further in this creative endeavor. It is unwise and foolish, indeed.
Suffice it to say that as this story unfolds, the Waterbred Dragons will get a share of the role of a villain, but also of a protaganist and an anti-hero. After all, perspective in life is what mainly affects the trajectory of the future. There are choices to be made, and these choices determine our fate. Literature imitates life, and that is why everything is interrelated and connected to each other.
For now, the special Dragons will continue to feed on the invisible.
And there, in such a true and noble pursuit, the visible and invisible eventually becomes one.
